Changes to the car restraints regulations will come into force in NSW on March 1, 2010. The new regulations are part of national safety reforms which have been talked about and approved nationally for two or three years, and become effective in Victoria next Monday, November 9 2009.
Briefly, the new regulations are as follows:
Children younger that 6 months must be restrained in a rearward facing capsule or convertible child restraint in the rearward facing position.
Children aged between 6 months and 4 years must be restrained in either a rear or forward facing restraint with an inbuilt harness.
Children aged between 4 and 7 years of age are to be secured in a forward facing restraint or booster seat.
Children younger than 4 years cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows of seating.
Children between 4 and 7 years cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows, unless all other back seats are occupied by children younger than 7 years in a child restraint or booster.
The aim of these new regulations is to ensure all children are travelling in an appropriate restraint or booster seat every time they are in a car, to help reduce the number of young children being injured or tragically killed in Australia.
